Four Core Goals

The YWSC prides itself on providing Hoover students with a wide variety of interesting and informative activities throughout the year. Generally, we focus each activity on at least one of our four core goals:
1. Healthy Choices and Healthy Living
Through exciting guest speakers and informational panels, the Club helps students become more aware of how the choices they make affects their lives. Past sessions have addressed breast cancer awareness, sexual health, healthy eating and exercising habits, and recognizing and avoiding unhealthy relationship.
2. Education
In addition to speaking with their undergraduate mentors about the benefits of education, Hoover students engage in a number of events and activities that support them in the pursuit of their educational goals. Every year students are brought to San Diego State University for a campus tour and to attend their first college class. The Club also holds regular college application seminars for juniors and seniors, and concludes each year with its own graduation awards ceremony.
3. Life-building and Work Skills
Club meetings frequently focus on providing practical knowledge that will aid its members in their daily lives. Together we’ve held career days, budget workshops, and outlined ways to help both mentors and students reach their goals. Meetings have also helped students learn about dressing professionally and building excellent resumés.
4. Promoting the Arts in Education
As frequently as possible, the YWSC tries to provide its members with opportunities to express themselves through creative activities. Whether it’s constructing quilts, posters, or zines, Club members are encouraged to combine girls’ issues with their own self-expression. To further develop their artistic knowledge, the Club also take field trips to local San Diego museums and galleries to experience the arts in person.
